Guarding Digital Footprint for a Life in Control
Discover how to protect your digital footprint and make conscious choices about privacy and control. Learn to refine your digital life and embrace a more intentional way of living Free With Tech.
We know what's important: every app should serve a purpose in the main areas of life—health, wealth, and relationships. Yet above all, we choose to live in the moment. The depth of our presence directly correlates to happiness. That's why we've decided to embrace focus and refine it in cycles.
A key practice is maintaining a paper journal. The intentional friction of writing slows us down, bringing clarity that digital tools often can't. Yet, when computation is necessary, we integrate digital tools as extensions of our journaling routine. This conscious digital toolkit prepares us for the intended goal of living Free With Tech: achieving Tech Independence.

From Focus to Control
While the journey began with reclaiming our attention, the final step is about control. Every online interaction leaves a digital footprint—whether private or public. Tech Independence means continually deciding which information we share and which we keep private, guided by our value system.
Ask yourself:
When uploading photos to online backups, are you confident they won’t be accessed by third-party processors?
When tracking expenses, are you okay with that data being used for ad targeting?
Do you feel secure storing private notes in the cloud?
How much of your private journal really needs to be online?
The reality is, we've already stripped unnecessary tech from our lives. We've reintroduced only what enhances our well-being in a minimalist way. Now it's about taking the next step: viewing these choices through the lens of control and privacy.
Mapping Tech Dependencies
VPN: Use a trustworthy VPN to protect your online activity, especially when using public Wi-Fi or accessing services that may track your location and behavior. This helps safeguard your privacy and minimize exposure to data collection.
Online Communications: Opt for privacy-first messaging apps (email and chat apps). Treat online conversations like street encounters—momentary and ephemeral. Set messages to auto-delete after certain time period where possible.
Password Managers: These should securely store all your passwords. Regularly review the list of services you commit to using.
Understanding Business Models: Know how the services you use generate revenue. If a model relies on exploiting your data, consider alternatives.
Sensitive Cloud Data: Back up this data on a consistent basis. If a service restricts backups or complicates account deletion, that's a red flag.
Ecosystem Lock-in: Choosing different providers for different apps can prevent over-dependence on a single ecosystem. While using a unified ecosystem may feel smoother, it often limits flexibility and makes it harder to switch when needed. Being conscious of this trade-off helps maintain digital independence and prevents being locked into restrictive platforms.
Open-Source and Home Cloud: Though less comfortable, self-hosted solutions provide full control over data security. It's more effort but may be worth it for sensitive items like photo libraries.
The Lens of Tech Independence
Tech Independence is about managing control over our digital identities. It's understanding what we control, what we don't, and deciding when and how to share data online. Once something is online, it becomes public in some form. This perspective sharpens our sensitivity to digital decisions and deepens our reasoning about our digital footprint.
Free With Tech is a lifestyle worth pursuing. It helped me escape tech entrapment—the default for most people. It requires effort, but I believe it's a path worth walking. I chose to share my journey publicly, hoping to inspire others. If even one person finds clarity, I'll be happy.
The choice is yours. Are you ready to become Free With Tech?
